Além disso, espera-se que os futuros sistemas sem fios sejam capazes de suportar uma ampla gama de serviços que Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising candidate for achieving high data rates in mobile environment, due to its resistance Inter Symbol Interference (ISI), which is a common problem found in high speed data communication. In OFDM, modulation may be differential or coherent. When using differential modulation there is no need for a channel estimate but its performance is inferior than the coherent system. Coherent modulation requires the channel estimation which gives better performance but with relatively more complex receiver structure. In this thesis two channel estimation techniques will be studied: Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation (PSAM) and implicit pilots. In the first case the pilots are multiplexed with the transmitted data, while in the second situation pilots are placed in positions along with the data. In this thesis, we consider different estimation techniques in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Mean Square Error (MSE). In order to do this analysis a Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) channel model was proposed which will be the basis for the study of the robustness and efficiency of the estimation methods presented.

“…The estimation of channel attenuation from known symbols multiplexed in the frame was introduced by Moher and Lodge [13] for single carrier systems under the name PSAM (pilot-symbol assisted modulation) and analyzed by Cavers [14]. The extension to multicarrier systems implies considering a two-dimensional space (time and frequency) with an increase in complexity that can be reduced if both dimensions are separated.…”

Abstract-Phase noise must be carefully considered when designing an OFDM-based communication system since an accurate prediction of the tolerable phase noise can allow the system and RF engineers to relax specifications. This paper analyzes the performance of OFDM systems under phase noise and its dependence on the number of sub-carriers both in the presence and absence of a phase correction mechanism. Besides some practical results are provided so as to give some insight into the phase noise spectral specifications that should be required to the local oscillator.
“…A pilot symbol from a known pseudo-random sequence +p I , is inserted in each block of (¸!1) data symbols +d I G , as shown in Figure 2. A pseudo-random sequence of pilot symbols is used to avoid transmitting tones at multiples of the pilot symbol rate [3]. To minimize the error in fading estimation due to additive noise, the pilot symbols are chosen from the four outermost vectors in the 16QAM signal constellation [4].…”
SUMMARYIn this paper, a novel pilot-symbol-aided (PSA) technique is proposed for fading estimation in the land mobile satellite fading channels. The proposed technique combines the fading estimates obtained from a bandwidth-e$cient technique and a conventional technique according to the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the fading estimates. To enhance the transmission quality, trellis-coded modulation (TCM) and diversity reception are employed in the system, and the combined estimates are subsequently used to correct the channel fading e!ects, to weight the signals from di!erent diversity branches, and to provide channel state information to the Viterbi decoder. Monte Carlo computer simulation has been used to study the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the proposed technique on trellis-coded 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation in the frequency non-selective Rician fading channels. Results have shown that the proposed PSA technique requires a very low bandwidth redundancy to provide satisfactory BER performance at low SNRs, and thus is suitable for use with TCM and diversity reception to achieve both bandwidth and power-e$cient transmission.
