Recent results of Alfvén wave heating experiments and the characteristics of a new regime of runaway discharges found in Tokamak Chauffage Alfvén Brésilien (TCABR) are discussed. (1) Wave excitation was carried out with one module of the antenna system, with and without a Faraday screen. Evidence of plasma heating was obtained in both cases, for coupled wave powers up to half of the Ohmic power, approximately, without uncontrollable density rise during the RF pulse. The antenna coupling with the plasma seems to have increased when the Faraday screen was removed. (2) The new regime of runaway discharges is produced by initiating the main plasma breakdown without pre-ionization and strongly increasing the neutral gas fuelling at the end of the current ramp-up phase. Consequently, the plasma cools down substantially and switches to a runaway mode in conditions under which the primary (Dreicer) mechanism is strongly suppressed. This new regime of runaway discharges is characterized by strong enhancement of the relaxation oscillations, which are seen in the H α and ECE emissions, coupled with large spikes in the line density, loop voltage, bolometer, and other diagnostic signals.

SCTE intends to provide a simple, yet powerful, framework for building data acquisition and equipment control systems for experimental Physics, and correlated areas. Via its SCTE::Instrument module, RS-232, USB, and LAN buses are supported, and the intricacies of hardware communication are encapsulated underneath an object oriented abstraction layer. Written in Perl, and using the SCPI protocol, enabled instruments can be easily programmed to perform a wide variety of tasks. While this work presents general aspects of the development of data acquisition systems using the SCTE framework, it is illustrated by particular applications designed for the calibration of several in-house developed devices for power measurement in the tokamak TCABR Alfvén Waves Excitement System.Programming language: Perl version 5.10.0 or higher Computer: PCOperating system: GNU/Linux (2.6.28-11), should also work on any Unix-based operational system. Supplementary material: SCPI capable digital oscilloscope, with RS-232, USB, or LAN communication ports, null modem, USB, or Ethernet cables.

ResumoNeste trabalho foram estudadas instabilidades magnetohidrodinâmicas (MHD) utilizando um novo sistema bolométrico que foi instalado no tokamak TCABR para medidas da evolução temporal da potência irradiada. Este novo sistema conta com 24 cordas verticais, capazes de mapear toda uma seção poloidal da coluna de plasma com resolução espacial de aproximadamente 2 cm e uma resolução temporal de 20 µs.Como se sabe, as instabilidades MHD degradam o confinamento do plasma e modificam a topologia das superfícies magnéticas, causando a perda da energia do plasma. Por conta disso, compreender essas instabilidadesé fundamental para o sucesso dos futuros reatores de fusão nuclear.As perturbações (oscilações) causadas pelas instabilidades MHD modulam diversos parâmetros macroscópicos do plasma como a densidade, a temperatura e a potência irradiada. Então, utilizando o diagnóstico bolométrico,é possível medir as oscilações no perfil de potência irradiada e, a partir deles, extrair informações importantes para determinar a origem e as características de tais instabilidades.No tokamak TCABR, as instabilidades foram caracterizadas através da análise espectral dos 24 sinais provenientes do novo sistema bolométrico.
