Taxonomy of the New World species of Lotus (Leguminosae: Loteae)

Abstract: The aims of the present study were to elucidate the relationships of the New World Lotus species groups, subgenera Acmispon Raf. (sections Microlotus Benth. and Simpeteria Ottley), Hosackia Benth. and Syrmatium Vog., and to compare these results with previous classifications and recent morphological and molecular phylogenetic hypotheses. A numerical taxonomic study using unweighted pair-group arithmetic average clustering was performed. The phenogram was generated from 34 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) × 4… Show more

“…In total, 15 populations of island A. argophyllus and 14 populations of A. dendroideus were sampled. Outgroup taxa were sampled to represent closely and more distantly related taxa based on taxonomy, phenotypic similarity, and previous phylogenetic analyses (Allan and Porter, 2000; Arambarri et al, 2005). These outgroup taxa included A. argophyllus var.…”

“…Genus Lotus L. (Leguminosae) comprises between 125 and 180 species, which is worldwide spread except in extremely cold regions and the lowlands in tropical areas of Southeast Asia, South America, and Central America (Arambarri et al, 2005;Diaz et al, 2005;Sokoloff and Lock, 2005). Among the species, Lotus corniculatus L., Lotus tenuis Waldst.…”

“…In particular, both morphological (Sokoloff, 2003a(Sokoloff, ,b, 2006Arambarri & al., 2005;Degtjareva & al., 2006) and molecular (Degtjareva & al., 2003(Degtjareva & al., , 2006; present study) cladistic analyses support the monophyly of all genera of Loteae (as defined by Sokoloff, 2003a). Molecular and morphological data for the two species of Dorycnopsis also are congruent.…”
