Taxonomy of the Caliciviruses

Abstract: The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has recently approved several proposals submitted by the present Caliciviridae Study Group. These proposals include the division of the family into 4 new genera designated Lagovirus, Vesivirus, "Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs), and "Sapporo-like viruses (SLVs); the latter 2 genera were assigned temporary names until acceptable names can be determined by the scientific community. The genera have been further divided into the following species: Feline caliciv… Show more

“…C aliciviruses infect a variety of species in nature including swine, humans, rabbits, sea lions, and cats (Green et al 2000). Feline calicivirus (FCV) infections are usually inapparent or are associated with fever, limping, and mild glossal/palatine ulceration.…”

“…The members of the genera "Sapporo-like viruses" (SLVs) and "Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) in the family Caliciviridae [14,32] are an important cause of gastroenteritis in humans [4,8,10,12,21,28,30,39,40,43] and animals [7,15,26,38]. In humans, the illnesses caused by SLVs and NLVs differ in epidemiological features and clinical symptoms.…”
