Taxonomy of Some Tetraphyllidean Cestodes From Elasmobranch Fishes

Abstract: Rhinebothrium pearsoni, sp nov., is described from Banks' shovelnosed ray, Aptychotrema banksii (Muller & Henle). PhyNobothrium orectolobi, sp. nov., is described from the wobbegong, Orectolobus maculatus (Bonnaterre). Anthobothrium amuleturn, sp nov., is described from the common shovel- nosed ray, Rhinobatos armatus (Gray). Pedibothrium ottleyi, sp. nov., is described from the zebra shark, Stegostoma tigrinum (Pennant), and the genus Pedibothrium Linton, 1909, is emended. Calliobothrium creeveyae, sp. no… Show more

“…The microtriche pattern observed on bothridial, apical muscular pads, cephalic peduncle, and segment surfaces of C. australis, C. barbarae, and C. lunae is generally consistent with the patterns described for other species of Calliobothrium (Butler, 1987; Caira and Ruhnke, 1991; Nasin et al, 1997). Even though bladelike and short filiform microtriches have been described on proximal bothridial surfaces for most species, only the bladelike microtriches could be observed in the species described above.…”

“…The present study contributes to a growing body of knowledge of elasmobranch cestodes by reporting on species of Rhinebothriinae New genus 3 from 17 species of elasmobranchs, nearly all of which have been reported as hosts for other cestode genera and species (see Euzet 1954, Butler 1987, Reyda and Caira 2006, Twohig et al 2008, Ivanov and Caira 2012, Schaeffner and Beveridge 2012, Mojica et al 2013, Cielocha et al 2014, Jensen and Russell 2014, Ruhnke et al 2015. Most such reports are fairly recent and were the result of the same survey efforts that made the present study possible.…”

“…Deviating from traditional classification of major batoid groups, Naylor, Caira, Jensen, Rosana, White, and Last, (2012) for despite records of cestodes from members of many of these genera (e.g., Ostrowski de Núñez, 1971;Butler, 1987;Campbell and Beveridge, 2002;Jensen, 2005;Cielocha and Jensen, 2013;Caira et al, 2013) However, additional specimens and observations are required to formally describe these 3 species. Though these species are not formally described, these reports provide further insight into the prevalence of Floriparicapitus in sawfish and guitarfish, especially in the Indo-Pacific region as well as the Western Atlantic and allude to greater species diversity in the genus.…”
