Taxonomy and reproductive biology of the genus Zephyranthes Herb. (Liliaceae) in Bangladesh

Abstract: The genus Zephyranthes Herb. is revised along with its pollination mechanism, seed germination and vegetative propagation. Detailed taxonomy of four Zephyranthes species occurring in Bangladesh, namely, Z. atamasco (L.) Herb., Z. candida (Lindl.) Herb., Z. carinata Herb. and Z. tubispatha (L’Her.) Herb. ex Traub. was studied with their updated nomenclature, important synonyms, phenology, specimens examined, habitat, distribution, economic value and mode of propagation. A dichotomous bracketed key is provided f… Show more

“…Karyological investigation on three Zephyranthes species and its taxonomic significance was described by Bangladesh researchers (Dash et al, 2020). Taxonomy and reproductive biology of the genus Zephyranthes in Bangladesh were studied (Afroz et al, 2018). Phytochemistry and pharmacology of genus Zephyranthes were investigated by Katoch & Singh (2015) and pharmacological properties by Francisco et al (2017).…”

“…Three Zephyranthes species, namely Z. candida, Z. carinata and Z. tubispatha were collected from the compound of University of Dhaka as well as different nurseries of Dhaka city and maintained in the Botanic Garden, Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The plant specimens were critically studied morphologically and identified with special reference to taxonomic values (Utech 2002, Siddiqui et al 2007, Afroz et al 2018. Healthy roots of at least 50 individuals were collected and pre-treated with 2 mM 8-hydroxyquinoline for 3 h 30 min at 18 C followed by fixation in Carnoy s fixative (ethanol : acetic acid=3 : 1) and preserved at 4 C. Roots were then hydrolyzed in a mixture of 1M HCl and 45% acetic acid (2 : 1) at 65 C for 4 min.…”

“…Вивчення запилення виявляє, що зазначені види Zephyranthes самозапилюються. Для проростання насіння у Z. atamasco було потрібно мінімум п'ять днів, а у Z. candida, Z. carinata та Z. tubispathaтри дні [1].…”
