Taxonomy and Natural History of the Funnel-Web Spider Genus Macrothele (Araneae : Hexathelidae : Macrothelinae) in the Ryukyu Islands (Japan) and Taiwan

Abstract: The distribution of the funnel-web spider genus Macrothele was studied in the Ryukyu Islands and northern Taiwan. Six species are recognized, three of which are only known from Taiwan {Macrothele holsti Pocock, 1901, M. simplicala (Saito, 1933), and M. taiwanensis sp. n.). Three new species are described from Amami-oshima and Tokunoshima in the northern Ryukyus (M amamiensis sp. n.) and from Ishigaki and Iriomote of the Yaeyama Islands (M. yaginumai sp. n. and M. gigas sp. n.).

“…A total of six recognized species occur on the Taiwan‐Ryukyu Archipelago. The Macrothele taiwanensis species group includes M. amamiensis (Amami Island), M. yaginumai (Ishigaki and Iriomote) and M. taiwanensis (Taiwan) (Shimojana & Haupt, ). These ground‐dwelling spiders have very limited dispersal capacities, and only adult males are migratory over short distances in association with reproductive effort.…”

“…These ground‐dwelling spiders have very limited dispersal capacities, and only adult males are migratory over short distances in association with reproductive effort. Morphologically, they are extremely conservative and are only identifiable by subtle differences in male genitalia (Shimojana & Haupt, ). Their multi‐island distribution and limited migratory abilities make the M. taiwanensis species group an ideal study system with which to test the impacts of palaeo‐geographical barriers on processes of evolutionary diversification in the Taiwan‐Ryukyu Archipelago.…”

“…Morphological differences in various island po-pulations are more or less obvious in whip scorpions (Haupt & Song 1996), Mesothelae (Haupt 1983(Haupt . 1990Ono 1996Ono , 1997, Hexathelidae (Shimojana & Haupt 1998) and Ctenizidae. In the last case, these differences have sometimes turned out to be slender and some characters show such great variation that they become useless for the distinction of species.…”

“…They usually build funnel webs using crevices and cavities in slopes, occasionally build web in surface deciduous layers. So far, the family has 47 species of two genera reported worldwide ( World Spider Catalog 2022 ), of which 29 species are known from China ( Pocock 1901 , Saitô 1933 , Hu and Li 1986 , Shimojana and Haupt 1998 , Song et al 1999 , Zhu et al 2000 , Zhu and Song 2000 , Xu and Yin 2001 , Xu et al 2002 , Li and Zha 2013 , Shi et al 2018 , Yang et al 2018 , Yang et al 2019 , Wang et al 2019 , Tang et al 2020 , Chen et al 2020 , Lin et al 2021 , Tang et al 2022 ).…”
