Two new species of Zeuxo Templeton, 1840 are described, one from Korea (Z. koreaensis), belonging to the Z. nonnani (Richardson, 1905) species complex, and one from Turkey (Z. turkensis). Two other Zeuxo species (Z. exsargasso Sieg, 1980 and Z. holdichi Bamber, 1990) are redescribed. The species Z. paranormani Sieg, 1980 is demoted to a junior synonym of Z. normani, while the 'Zeuxo normani' from Australia is raised to full species rank under the name Z. edgari.

The tanaidaceans are among the most conspicuous and ecologically relevant benthic microcrustaceans in the marine realm but there are only a few records of species of tanaids associated with other marine organisms. During a long-term survey on the biology and distribution of the Caribbean manatee Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus in Mexican waters, parasites and epibionts were collected from 47 individuals that were captured for tagging in two bay systems. Well-established epibiotic communities of the tanaidacean Hexapleomera robusta (Moore) were found on eight of these animals; this tanaid crustacean formed patches of tubes adhered to the skin surface. Patches were distributed in different parts of the body surface but mainly along the backbone depression, the caudal zone, and on the lateral margins; in some instances they were related to clusters of barnacles. Highly significant differences of infestation rates were revealed between Chetumal Bay and Ascensión Bay, the latter representing better conditions (high salinity and hydrodynamism) for tanaid invasion and settlement on the manatee. It is speculated that the tanaid is a commensal; no visible damage was found in the host and its presence was not related to skin lesions. The tanaid probably captures suspended particles as the manatee feeds. This is the first confirmed record of a symbiotic association involving a tanaid and the Caribbean manatee. The tanaid species recorded (H. robusta) and the harpacticoid copepod Balaenophilus manatorum (Ortíz, Lalana & Torres), have both been recorded also as epibionts of sea turtles. The tanaid has been known from sea turtles for some time, but the copepod was first recorded from a manatee and was subsequently found on sea turtles a few years later.

A tip of the iceberg—Pseudotanaidae (Tanaidacea) diversity in the North Atlantic

During two IceAGE expeditions, a large collection of Tanaidacea was gathered from the shelf down to the slope (213−2750 m) in six areas off Iceland-the Irminger Basin, the Iceland Basin, the Norwegian Sea, the Denmark Strait, the Iceland-Faroe Ridge, and the Norwegian Channel. In this collection, members of the family Pseudotanaidae were most numerous component. We examined 40 samples collected with different gears (e.g., EBS, VVG. GKG), in which 323 pseudotanaid individuals were counted and covered a total depth from 213.9 to 2746.4 m. Morphological identification of the material has revealed the presence of five species: Akanthinotanais cf. longipes, Mystriocentrus biho sp. n. Pseudotanais misericorde sp. n., P. svavarssoni sp. n., and P. sigrunis sp. n. The description of the four new species has been presented in the paper and a rank of the subgenus Akanthinotanais is elevated to a genus rank. A large group of morphologically almost identical specimens, similar with P. svavarssoni sp. n. from a wide depth range and from various areas off Iceland was discriminated to species by applying morphometric methods; one distinct species (P. svavarssoni sp. n.) and complex of presumably cryptic species the species was discovered. Based on current data and literature records, similarity among fauna of Pseudotanaidae was assessed with applying Bray-Curtis formula. As results, potential zoogeographic regions in the North Atlantic have been distinguished.
