Taxonomic revision of wasp-like richardiids, Neoidiotypa Osten-Sacken (Diptera, Tephritoidea, Richardiidae)

Abstract: Previously Neoidiotypa was a monotypic genus represented by a peculiar wasp-like richardiid from Cuba - N. appendiculata (Loew). In this work, five new species are described in this genus: N. mexicana sp. nov. from Mexico; N. alamagna sp. nov., N. flaviatra sp. nov., N. nigra sp. nov. and N. sticta sp. nov. from Costa Rica. New diagnostic characters for the genus are included. An identification key and illustrations for all species are provided.

“…With about 210 valid species (Steyskal 1968, Wendt and Ale-Rocha 2014a classified in 32 genera (Hancock 2010), richardiid flies have been insufficiently sampled in most regions of the world, and many of the included genera need to be revised. The biology of richardiid species has been poorly investigated, but it is known that many are potential pests of some types of fruits (Peñaranda and Ospina 1999, Montilla et al 2007, Arellano et al 2015, while others are saprophagous species associated with animal decomposition (Lopes de Carvalho and Linhares 2001, Moretti et al 2008, Cavallari et al 2015.…”

“…Richardiidae are a small family of about 200 valid species (STEYSKAL 1968, WENDT & ALE-ROCHA 2014b, 2015 in 32 genera (HANCOCK 2010). The family only occurs in the New World, and the vast majority of species are recorded from the Neotropical Region (ACZÉL 1950, STEYSKAL 1968.…”

“…Recently, however, the family has been the focus of more extensive taxonomic studies. Examples are an identification key to all genera (HANCOCK 2010) and revisions of several genera (WENDT & ALE-ROCHA 2012, 2014b, including new taxa (e.g. PEREZ-GELABERT & THOMPSON 2006, CARVALHO et al 2011, ALENCAR et al 2013, WENDT & ALE-ROCHA 2014a, b, 2015.…”
