“…However, some of these characters vary ontogenetically, and must be cautiously employed to differentiate species (Uchida, 1929; Hirano, 1986; Miranda, Morandini & Marques, 2009). Additionally, the recent molecular phylogenetic hypothesis indicates the need to reassess and reinterpret many of the internal characters, such as the claustrum and the longitudinal muscles (see Miranda et al, 2016).…”

“…Besides, there are species without white spots, such as H. antarcticus (cf. Miranda, Morandini & Marques, 2009), suggesting that the nematocysts produced in the internal subumbrellar epidermis would not need a “selective reservoir” (Weill, 1925; Weill, 1935) in order to become mature and migrate to the secondary tentacles.…”

“…Only 12 species were thought to occur in the Southern Hemisphere (Grohmann et al 1999;Lutz et al 2006), but these have recently been reduced to 11 (Miranda et al 2009). Most Southern Hemisphere species have been recorded at just one locality and are poorly known Á some of them require taxonomic revision and might be considered doubtful.…”

“…The 'ovoid' nematocysts described by Uchida (1929), whose work preceded Weill (1934), are probably also euryteles. Nematocysts of this shape have also been identified as euryteles in four species of Haliclystus (Gwilliam 1956), in Stenoscyphopsis vermiformis (Gwilliam 1956), Lucernaria janetae (Collins & Daly 2005), as ovoid and round euryteles in Haliclystus californiensis (Kahn et al 2010) and as microbasic heterotrichous euryteles in H. antarcticus (Miranda et al 2009). The narrower, sack-shaped nematocysts which we call here type 1 isorhizas are similar to 'atrich' capsules (a subgroup of isorhizas) described for H. octoradiatus (Weill 1934), four species of Haliclystus (Gwilliam 1956) and S. vermiformis (Gwilliam 1956).…”
