Taxonomic re-evaluation of species in Talaromyces section Islandici, using a polyphasic approach

Abstract: The taxonomy of Talaromyces rugulosus, T. wortmannii and closely related species, classified in Talaromyces sect. Islandici, is reviewed in this paper. The species of Talaromyces sect. Islandici have restricted growth on MEA and CYA, generally have yellow mycelia and produce rugulosin and/or skyrin. They are important in biotechnology (e.g. T. rugulosus, T. wortmannii) and in medicine (e.g. T. piceus, T. radicus). The taxonomy of sect. Islandici was resolved using a combination of morphological, extrolite and … Show more

“…2014), accepting seven sections and 88 species. This study promoted the taxonomy of this genus, and since more than 17 new species were described (Visagie et al., 2015, Yilmaz et al., 2016a, Yilmaz et al., 2016b, Luo et al., 2016, Romero et al., 2016, Wang et al., 2016). In this study, Talaromyces isolates obtained from indoor air in China were studied.…”

“…The majority of species belonging to Talaromyces section Islandici grow restrictedly on most media, produce yellow mycelium and characteristic mycotoxins (Yilmaz et al., 2014, Yilmaz et al., 2016b). The three new Islandici species grow restrictedly and produce yellow mycelium on DG18, confirming their relationship with other member of this section.…”

“…The newly generated sequences were included in a data set including sequences obtained from Yilmaz et al (2014) and supplemented with sequences of new species that were subsequently described (Visagie et al 2015;Wang et al 2016;Yilmaz et al 2016). The dataset for each gene was aligned using the MUSCLE software included in the MEGA v. 6.0.6 software package (Tamura et al 2013).…”

“…Biverticillium to Talaromyces. The Talaromyces monograph of Yilmaz et al (2014) covered 88 species, and the genus currently includes 103 species (Visagie et al 2015;Romero et al 2016;Wang et al 2016;Yilmaz et al 2016).…”
