Taxonomic diversity of foraminifers of the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary interval in the South Urals

Abstract: The taxonomic diversity of foraminifers from the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary beds was studied in the key sections on the western slope of the South Urals in Russia and from Mugodzhary in Kazakhstan. These sections are mainly composed of marine carbonates, apparently deposited in a shallow-water environment. The boundary interval contains 111 species belonging to 30 genera within the foraminiferal zones Quasiendothyra communis, Q. kobeitusana, Tournayellina beata pseudobeata, Earlandia minima, and Show more

“…• according to Kulagina (2013), Tournayellina beata pseudobeata Reitlinger and Kulagina, 1987 appears in the topmost Famennian (4.5 m below the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary); • this FAD is located in the middle praesulcata Zone of conodonts according Kalvoda and Kukal (1987) (Bykova, 1952). “…The taxonomic study on foraminifers of the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary interval in the South Urals by Kulagina (2013) shows that biodiversity especially of endothyrids reached a peak during the Late Devonian which was followed by a drop in evolutionary rates and extinction related to the Hangenberg Event. Lowest diversity dominated by unilocular growth forms is observed in the early Tournaisian.…”

“…Based on the age-diagnostic forms such as Earlandia elegans (Rauser-Chernousova & Reitlinger) and Eochernyshinella crassitheca (Lipina), these limestones are correlated with the Chernyshinella disputabilis Foraminiferal Zone of the South Ural (Kulagina 2013), which corresponds to the Siphonodella belkai Conodont Zone in the same region. The Szklary Formation in the Dębnik Anticline has been earlier correlated by Poty et al (2007) with the MFZ2 Foraminiferal Zone of the Belgium Dinant's sedimentation area.…”
