Taxonomic and faunistic studies of the Sepsidae (Diptera) from Vietnam, with descriptions of six new species

Abstract: A total of 52 species belonging to nine genera of the Sepsidae are reported from Vietnam. Of these, six species (Dicranosepsis splendifica sp. nov., D. trochanteris sp. nov., Mucha rectotibialis sp. nov., Perochaeta exilis sp. nov., Sepsis nigriminima sp. nov. and S. silvicola sp. nov.) are described as new to science. Eighteen species are newly recorded from Vietnam. Toxopoda pseudoviduata Ozerov, 2010 is synonymized with T. cavata Iwasa, 2008. The faunal composition of Vietnamese Sepsidae is divided into six… Show more

“…There is one more species with long genal setae -Dicranosepsis barbata Iwasa in Iwasa and Thinh, 2012. This species is described from Vietnam, Lào Cai and Lai Chau Provinces (Iwasa & Thinh, 2012) also. The new species clearly differs in structure of male fore leg.…”

“…The fauna of Vietnam Sepsidae is studied better, than those of many countries of Oriental Region. Iwasa and Thinh [2012] recorded 52 species from 9 genera of Sepsidae in this country. Additional four new sepsid species were described from the north of Vietnam [Ozerov & Krivosheina, 2011;Ozerov, 2012;Ozerov & Krivosheina, 2012].…”

“…McAlpine () emphasized that many Papuan acalyptrate taxa have been limited by Lydekker's Line (modified Weber's Line). Iwasa () showed the presence of some endemic species of Sepsidae in Wallacea limited by Wallace's Line and Lydekker's Line; however, neither Wallace's Line nor Weber's Line has much significance for the Drosophilidae (Okada ). Although the origin of S. fascipes of group 2 is unclear, it is probably of a Wallacean–Papuan lineage that crossed Lydekker's Line.…”

“…The genus Mucha is a newly established genus with five known species distributed only in the Oriental region (Ozerov 1992(Ozerov , 2012Iwasa & Thinh 2012). It is characterized by the following features: flagellomere elongated, arista plumose (mostly on dorsal side, except Mucha plumosa Ozerov also with short rays on ventral side); postgena wide; face with well-developed facial carina; abdominal syntergite 1+2 with one pair of strong setae.…”
