Taxon richness and biogeography of the Cladocera (Crustacea: Ctenopoda, Anomopoda) of Thailand

Abstract: At present, 99 species of cladocerans are known from Thailand, but up to ten more have not been identified to species, particularly in Chydorus, Ephemeroporus and Pleuroxus. Cosmopolitan species are a minority, while wide-ranging circumtropical taxa are an important element, beside species that only occur in the tropics-subtropics of two continents. At least three species are suspected of a neotropical -southeast Asian disjunction, while three more are provisionally considered endemic of Thailand. Daphnia, as … Show more

“…For a description, see Orlova-Bienkowskaia (2001). This species is very close to S. expinosus, already reported from Thailand (Maiphae et al, 2008), but, according to Orlova-Bienkowskaya (2001), it is a separate species, which differs from S. expinosus by the morphology of the postabdominal claw, having a pecten of 18-22 spines on the outer side instead of [8][9][10][11][12]. This is the first record for Vietnam and the Indochina region.…”

“…Our results significantly increase the number of cladoceran species known from South Vietnam, but, nevertheless, the local species richness appears still considerably less than what has been recorded for Thailand (Maiphae et al, 2008;. This study, together Tab.…”

“…Taxonomy, a science out of fashion, forms a necessary basis for critical studies in ecology and biogeography of these micro-crustaceans and a realistic assessment of their global diversity (Dodson and Frey, 2001). Efforts in systematics, taxonomical capacity building and the assessment of the global Cladocera richness have now strongly increased in the Neotropics, SouthEast and East Asia (Elmoor-Loureiro, 2000;Elías-Gutiér-rrez et al, 2008;Maiphae et al, 2008;Kotov and Sinev, 2011), yet, unfortunately, they have decreased in Europe and North America.…”
