Taxi ‘sugar daddies’ and taxi queens: Male taxi driver attitudes regarding transactional relationships in the Western Cape, South Africa

Abstract: Media reports are emerging on the phenomenon of young girls who travel with older mini-bus taxi drivers, and who are thought to have sex with the drivers in exchange for gifts and money. The extent to which such relationships might facilitate unsafe sexual practices and increased risks for both the men and the young women, often referred to as taxi queens, remains an important question in the light of the current challenges of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. However, very little research has been undertaken on… Show more

“…Women are particularly stigmatized as outright prostitutes in some cases with 54.5% of participants in this study responding affirmatively to the question that "women prostitutes are responsible for the spread of HIV in our community" (p ≤ 0. 0001), and that promiscuous men and women are the ones who spread HIV within our community This observation is supported by recent reports of young girls who may travel with mini-bus taxi drivers in South Africa and are alleged to engage in transactional sex with them leading to stigmatization [38]. These findings are also similar to results from an Indian study where 44% of HCWs believed only men who patronise sex workers have to worry about HIV, and another 43% believed that sex workers are the only women who should worry about HIV/AIDS infection [27].…”

“…Transactional sex is commonly reported amongst heterosexual women in South Africa as part of the intimate relationship (Dunkle et al 2004, Potgieter et al 2012). Kaufman and Stavrou (2004) Accidental sex is an unplanned sexual activity that may have implications for preparedness to use safe sex measures.…”

“…Additionally, transactional sex is also driven by a variety of non-material factors, namely the desire to express and explore one’s sexuality (Masvawure 2010), to self-fashion oneself as a modern subject (Leclerc-Madlala 2003) and to experience love and pleasure (Nguyen 2010, Niang et al 2003). Sex-for-consumption is associated with the desire to access consumption goods and ostentatious lifestyles that are associated with success, social prestige, and modernity (Bhana and Pattman 2011; Potgieter et al 2013). A recent study of transactional sex at a university campus in Zimbabwe showed that the providers (i.e., heterosexual men) in these relationships also acquired social status and prestige in their peer groups by being seen in the company of young, attractive and intelligent university women (Masvawure 2010).…”
