Tau decays with neutral kaons

Abstract: The branching ratio of the τ lepton to a neutral kaon meson is measured from a sample of approximately 200,000 τ decays recorded by the OPAL detector at centre-ofmass energies near the Z 0 resonance. The measurement is based on two samples which identify one-prong τ decays with K 0 L and K 0 S mesons. The combined branching ratios are measured to bewhere the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

“…Measurements of g bb [172] rely on an inclusive lifetime-based tag applied to the jets reconstructed in the event, while measurements of g cc [131,173,174] make use of exclusive D * reconstruction, final states containing leptons, or are based on the combination of event shape variables.…”

“…Two examples of results are displayed in figure 125. The figure on the left, from Opal [523], shows the results obtained from the study of the reaction e + e − → e + e − at 189 GeV. This is sensitive to the couplings |λ 1j 1 | with j = 2, 3.…”

“…Precision measurements of the branching fractions for various processes are essential for these studies. Despite extensive studies of τ hadronic decays performed at LEP and CLEO, prior to the B factory era, Cabibbo and phase-space suppression have resulted in limited statistics for the studies of kaon production in hadronic τ decays [7][8][9][10].…”
