A formal semantics is introduced for a Process Network model, which combines streaming and reactive control processing with task parallelism properties suitable to exploit multi-cores. Applications that react to environment stimuli are implemented by communicating sporadic and periodic tasks, programmed independently from an execution platform. Two functionally equivalent semantics are defined, one for sequential execution and one real-time. The former ensures functional determinism by implying precedence constraints between jobs (task executions), hence, the program outputs are independent from the task scheduling. The latter specifies concurrent execution on a real-time platform, guaranteeing all model's constraints; it has been implemented in an executable formal specification language. The model's implementation runs on multi-core embedded systems, and supports integration of runtime managers for shared HW/SW resources (e.g. for controlling QoS, resource interference or power consumption). Finally, a model transformation approach has been developed, which allowed to port and statically schedule a real spacecraft on-board application on an industrial multi-core platform.

The Behavior-Interaction-Priority (BIP) framework -rooted in rigorous semantics -allows the construction of systems that are correct-by-design. BIP has been effectively used for the construction and analysis of large systems such as robot controllers and satellite on-board software. Nevertheless, the specification of BIP models is done in a purely textual manner without any code editor support. To facilitate the specification of BIP models, we present DesignBIP, a web-based, collaborative, version-controlled design studio. To promote model scaling and reusability of BIP models, we use a graphical language for modeling parameterized BIP models with rigorous semantics. We present the various services provided by the design studio, including model editors, code editors, consistency checking mechanisms, code generators, and integration with the JavaBIP tool-set. The output of the tools is then collected and sent back to the model editors (step 4) for visualization of analysis or execution results.We present the DesignBIP studio for modeling and generating systems with the BIP [2] framework. BIP comprises a language with rigorous operational semantics and a dedicated tool-set including code generators, run-time support tools, i.e., BIP engines, and verification tools [5,7]. Depending on the application domain, BIP offers several compilation chains, targeting different execution platforms and programming languages such as C++ [2] Java [8] Haskell, and Scala [14].The specification of models in the BIP framework is done by using the BIP language in a textual manner [1] without offering any dedicated code editors. Thus, developing large systems with the BIP toolset can be challenging and error prone. In DesignBIP we have opted for a graphical language to enhance readability and easiness of expression. DesignBIP offers a complete modeling solution, in which we have integrated the tools offered by JavaBIP, the Java-based implementation of BIP [8]. Relying on the observation that systems are usually built from multiple instances of the same component type, we propose a parameterized graphical language for BIP that enhances scalability and reduces the model size.DesignBIP is a web-based, collaborative, version controlled design studio based on WebGME [21]. DesignBIP allows real-time collaboration between multiple developers. Project changes are committed and versioned, which enables branching, merging and viewing the history of a project. Model-based software engineering for an optical navigation system for spacecraft

The project ATON (Autonomous Terrain-based Optical Navigation) at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing an optical navigation system for future landing missions on celestial bodies such as the Moon or asteroids. Image data obtained by optical sensors can be used for autonomous determination of the spacecraft's position and attitude. Camera-in-the-loop experiments in the TRON (Testbed for Robotic Optical Navigation) laboratory and flight campaigns with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are performed to gather flight data for further development and to test the system in a closed-loop scenario. The software modules are executed in the C++ Tasking Framework that provides the means to concurrently run the modules in separated tasks, send messages between tasks, and schedule task execution based on events. Since the project is developed in collaboration with several institutes in different domains at DLR, clearly defined and well-documented interfaces are necessary. Preventing misconceptions caused by differences between various development philosophies and standards turned out to be challenging. After the first development cycles with manual Interface Control Documents (ICD) and manual implementation of the complex interactions between modules, we switched to a model-based approach. The ATON model covers a graphical description of the modules, their parameters and communication patterns. Type and consistency checks on this formal level help to reduce errors in the system. The model enables the generation of interfaces and unified data types as well as their documentation. Furthermore, the C++ code for the exchange of data between the modules and the scheduling of the software tasks is created automatically. With this approach, changing the data flow in the system or adding additional components (e.g. a second camera) have become trivial.
