An increasingly common practice in large software development companies is to distribute tasks among geographically dispersed teams. This practice can bring many benefits, such as gains in terms of time and cost, but many are the challenges. One of the major challenges regards the method of assigning tasks to remote teams. This method involves knowing, classifying and ordering the factors that drive the assignment of tasks in a distributed scenario. This is a typical scenario for decision-making based on multiple criteria. Verbal decision analysis (VDA) is a multi-criteria framework to decisionmaking. This study presents a hybrid methodology structured on methods of VDA for classification ORdinal CLASSification (ORCLASS) and ordering (ZAPROS III-i) of factors that drive task assignment to distributed teams in software development projects. Tasks were grouped according to their type, i.e. requirements, architecture, implementation, and testing.

Abstract. Task allocation is considered an important activity in software project management. However, the process of allocating tasks in agile software development teams has not received much attention in empirical research. Through a pilot study involving mixed open-ended and closed-ended interviews questions with 11 agile software practitioners working within a software development organization in India, we explain the process of task allocation as including three different mechanisms of workflow across teams: team-independent, teamdependent, and hybrid workflow; and five types of task allocation strategies: manager-driven, team-driven, individual-driven, manager-assisted and teamassisted. Knowing these workflow mechanisms and task allocation strategies will help software teams and project managers make more effective decisions around workflow and task allocation.

Abstract-The management of distributed software development projects presents many challenges. One of them happens right at the start of the project and consists of the allocation of tasks between remote teams. When allocating a task to a site, the project manager takes into account several factors such as technical knowledge of staff and proximity to the client. The project manager usually takes this decision in a subjective way. The verbal decision analysis is an approach based on solving problems through multi-criteria qualitative analysis, which means it considers the analysis of subjective criteria. This paper describes the application of verbal decision analysis methodologies ORCLASS and ZAPROS III-i to classify and rank the most relevant factors that the project managers should take into account when allocating tasks in projects of distributed development of software.
