Cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott) is one of the tuberous root crops in the Araceae family that has been grown in Ethiopia. It has spread widely and has become an important part of the agriculture and food systems of indigenous communities in southern and southwestern Ethiopia. However, less research attention has been given to cocoyam. It is a neglected/underutilized or ignored crop. A survey was conducted to assess the state of cocoyam in Ethiopia based on the farmers' perception. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 50 farmers from five zones. During the survey, two distinct cocoyam landraces (green and purple leaf colored cocoyam landraces) were observed. Numerous local names were given to the crop; the most commonly encountered names were "Keni Zhang", "Cubi Zhang", "Sudan Kido" and "Samuna Boina". The naming systems were, in most cases, followed by the local name given to taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott), as seen in the cases of "Zhang" and "Boina". The local term "Godere" or taro was also used for both X. sagittifolium and C. esculenta. Cocoyam is locally used for food (100%), fodder (60%) and other purposes such as medicine and organic fertilizer. Farmers use the local method in the preparation of cormels for food and medicine. Corms were preferred planting materials for Ethiopian farmers. The farmers' preference to cocoyam was related to adaptability, edibility of its young leaves and it serving as food security crop whereas hardness texture, low market demand, sour taste and unpleasant smell of cocoyam were farmers disliked traits. In this study, useful knowledge about cocoyam in Ethiopia was demonstrated. The quality and productivity of cocoyam in Ethiopia need to be improved based on farmer preferred attributes to ensure dissemination of the useful aspects and enhance sustainable production of cocoyam in Ethiopia.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta [L.] Schott) breeders apply heavy selection pressure on yield during the seminal (F1) and first clonal (C1) generations. However, the genetic gain achieved with this practice has never been evaluated and prior accurate assessment of the genetic control of the traits under selection is required. The present study aimed at evaluating broad‐sense heritability, between‐trait and between‐generation correlations, and genetic gain for traits related to vegetative growth, yield, and corm quality. A fully randomized‐block trial consisting of 13 full‐sib families (1890 genotypes) was set up and measured in F1 and C1 generations. ANOVAs were performed with mixed models, considering spatial autocorrelations when necessary. Chi‐square tests revealed the stability of the presence or absence of stolons, suckers, and inflorescences between F1 and C1, suggesting strong genetic control for such organs. Highly fitted models resulted in particularly accurate predicted genetic values. Heritability and genetic gain computations assumed unbalanced data and gave rather high values. The number of stolons, the number of suckers, fresh corm weight, and dry matter content were found to be the most heritable traits. Mass and family selection strategies were tested and revealed moderate to high genetic gain for most heritable traits in both generations. Selection indexes such as the vegetative growth index and future breeding strategies are discussed. Results could be of interest for breeding in other aroid crops.

Cassava Breeding II: Phenotypic Correlations through the Different Stages of Selection

Breeding cassava relies on a phenotypic recurrent selection that takes advantage of the vegetative propagation of this crop. Successive stages of selection (single row trial–SRT; preliminary yield trial–PYT; advanced yield trial–AYT; and uniform yield trials UYT), gradually reduce the number of genotypes as the plot size, number of replications and locations increase. An important feature of this scheme is that, because of the clonal, reproduction of cassava, the same identical genotypes are evaluated throughout these four successive stages of selection. For this study data, from 14 years (more than 30,000 data points) of evaluation in a sub-humid tropical environment was consolidated for a meta-analysis. Correlation coefficients for fresh root yield (FRY), dry matter content (DMC), harvest index (HIN), and plant type score (PTS) along the different stages of selection were estimated. DMC and PTS measured in different trials showed the highest correlation coefficients, indicating a relatively good repeatability. HIN had an intermediate repeatability, whereas FRY had the lowest value. The association between HIN and FRY was lower than expected, suggesting that HIN in early stages was not reliable as indirect selection for FRY in later stages. There was a consistent decrease in the average performance of clones grown in PYTs compared with the earlier evaluation of the same genotypes at SRTs. A feasible explanation for this trend is the impact of the environment on the physiological and nutritional status of the planting material and/or epigenetic effects. The usefulness of HIN is questioned. Measuring this variable takes considerable efforts at harvest time. DMC and FRY showed a weak positive association in SRT (r = 0.21) but a clearly negative one at UYT (r = −0.42). The change in the relationship between these variables is the result of selection. In later stages of selection, the plant is forced to maximize productivity on a dry weight basis either by maximizing FRY or DMC, but not both. Alternatively, the plant may achieve high dry root yield by simultaneously attaining “acceptable” (but not maximum) levels of FRY and DMC.
