Targeting intensive job assistance to ex‐offenders by the nature of offense: Results from a randomized control trial

Abstract: As many as two-thirds of newly-released inmates will be arrested for a new offense within 3 years. This study evaluates the impact of job assistance on recidivism rates among ex-offenders. The job assistance program, run though the private company America Works, uses a network of employers to place clients. Ex-offenders were randomly assigned to intensive job assistance (treatment group) or the standard program (control group). The intensive program is meant to improve average work readiness for ex-offenders. … Show more

“…Obtaining the necessary basic needs is integral to re-entering society successfully. Research has identified the following categories as essential basic needs: positive social supports (Denney et al, 2014), comprehensive social services (Visher & Travis, 2011), employment and education training (Shivy et al, 2007), stable housing (Bowman & Ely, 2020), transportation (Bollinger & Yelowitz, 2021), and assistance with unpaid child support debt (National Conference of State Legislature [NCSL], 2017).…”

“…Such reentry programs based on daily or almost-daily contact with the participants, with meals provided as part of program attendance, allow an opportunity to randomize participants into a TAU condition versus an experimental condition that includes the same meals, just with microbiome-friendly food variations like fermented versus nonfermented milk beverages. When these programs are assessed in a randomized trial, random assignment of ex-offenders into the program versus a standard probation/parole as a TAU control provides the most rigorous test of program effectiveness(Bollinger & Yelowitz, 2021;Cook et al, 2015;Pettus-Davis et al, 2016).In such cases, a third arm can be added to the standard evaluation protocol as a relatively easy way to perform an important test of microbiome enhancement in addition to the standard test ofprogram effectiveness. Instead of a two-way randomization (TAU/ control and program), a three-way randomization can be F I G U R E 2 Two types of modified randomized trials of violence prevention programs including the test of a probiotic intervention: (a) a full, four-arm study and (b) a partial, three-arm study.…”
