Targeting Cellular Stress Mechanisms and Metabolic Homeostasis by Chinese Herbal Drugs for Neuroprotection

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine has been practiced for centuries in East Asia. Herbs are used to maintain health and cure disease. Certain Chinese herbs are known to protect and improve the brain, memory, and nervous system. To apply ancient knowledge to modern science, some major natural therapeutic compounds in herbs were extracted and evaluated in recent decades. Emerging studies have shown that herbal compounds have neuroprotective effects or can ameliorate neurodegenerative diseases. To understand the mechan… Show more

“…The pathological process of ischemic cerebrovascular disease injury is extremely complicated, which involves energy metabolism disorder, excitatory amino acid toxicity, intracellular calcium overload, free radical damage, neuronal apoptosis, inflammatory response, and so on in brain tissue [ 53 ]. Oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress can occur simultaneously or sequentially during neuronal damage in IS [ 54 ], and calcium is the interconnected link between the two, eventually leading to nerve damage. The endoplasmic reticulum is the main place for cells to process proteins and store calcium.…”

“…[ 123 , 124 ] Drawing on ancient TCM theories and combining them with advanced modern technologies, numerous active compounds extracted from traditional herbs have been shown to possess neuroprotective effects. [ 5 , 125 ] The pharmacological mechanisms of these active compounds against CNS diseases have been continuously studied and verified, and have been applied in clinical treatments. [ 126 , 127 , 128 ] In the following sections, we have selected several representative TCM natural compounds widely used in both clinical treatments and scientific research of CNS diseases.…”

“…Chinese herbs begin to systematically treat stroke before 1800 years and have accumulated abundant clinical experiences and effective prescriptions. Emerging studies suggest that compounds extracted from Chinese herbs exert significant neuroprotective effects via multiple approaches [ 17 ]. Angelica sinensis (Oliv.)…”
