Targeted vertebrate surveys enhance the faunal importance and improve explanatory models within the Eastern Arc Mountains of Kenya and Tanzania

Abstract: Aim Detailed knowledge of species distributions, endemism patterns and threats is critical to site prioritization and conservation planning. However, data from biodiversity inventories are still limited, especially for tropical forests, and even well recognized hotspots remain understudied. We provide an example of how updated knowledge on species occurrence from strategically directed biodiversity surveys can change knowledge on perceived biodiversity importance, and facilitate understanding diversity pattern… Show more

“…The Udzungwa Mountains have enormous biodiversity value, with the highest plant species richness, the highest endemic vertebrate species richness, and the second highest endemic plant species richness of all mountain blocs in the region (Platts et al 2010; Rovero et al 2014). The distinctive character of Udzungwa biodiversity has been recently highlighted by high-profile mammal species discoveries including the kipunji monkey ( Rungwecebus kipunji ; Davenport et al 2006) and Udzungwa elephant shrew ( Rhynchocyon udzungwensis ; Rovero et al 2008).…”

“…Currently, the vast majority of natural forests in the EAMs are under different forms of legal protection, with most falling within the category of "National Forest Reserves" managed for protection of water resources, soil erosion prevention, and biodiversity conservation [78][79][80]. However, Tabor et al [81] argued that forest loss was still happening in the protected areas, though to a far lower extent than outside protected areas.…”

“…It is located within the Eastern Arc Mountains and is one of the most important sites for biodiversity in that globally recognised centre of endemism (Burgess et al, 2007;Rovero et al, 2014). The reserve is surrounded by eight villages (Tanzanian national census data, 2012).…”
