Targeted Metabolite Analysis and Antioxidant Potential ofRumex induratus

Abstract: Targeted metabolite analysis of aqueous extract of Rumex induratus leaves, in terms of phenolic compounds and organic acids, and the study of its antioxidant activity against the DPPH(*) radical, a reactive oxygen species, hypochlorous acid, and a reactive nitrogen species, nitric oxide ((*)NO), were performed. The samples were collected in several locations, spontaneously occurring or from greenhouse culture, at different stages of development and seasons. The phenolic composition was achieved by high-perform… Show more

“…Amounts between 137 and 256 mg/100 g were described for R. pulcher, R. papillaris (Morales et al, 2014;Sánchez-Mata et al, 2012) and R. acetosella ; but a small amount of 0.7 mg/100 g was reported in tender leaves of R. induratus (Pinela et al, 2016c). Contrariwise, a high content in oxalic acid was found by Guerra et al (2008) in an aqueous extract of the same plant. The authors also verified that the oxalic acid content vary depending on the development stage of the plant and environmental conditions.…”

“…Polygonaceae), a native Iberian plant that occurs mainly in dry and stony sites of the thermo-Mediterranean region. Their tender leaves are appreciated and consumed, especially in salads (Carvalho 2010), constituting a promising dietary source of nutrients (Pereira et al 2011) and biologically active compounds (Ferreres et al 2006;Guerra et al 2008). However, this leafy vegetable is underutilized, due to the altered lifestyle of the modern society and introduction of non-native vegetables, not being found in food composition databases.…”
