Targeted Education ApproaCH to improve Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes (TEACH-PD): A feasibility study

Abstract: Background: There is substantial variation in peritonitis rates across peritoneal dialysis (PD) units globally. “…This strengthens the importance of methods of exit site care as well as proper teaching and PD training. Recent study of a standardized education training programme for both PD trainers and PD patients has demonstrated feasibility of implementation in a renal clinical setting [ 5 ]. “…The training curriculum is advised to incorporate general theories of adult learning principles as a lower rate of exit site infection has been observed in association with this practice in a prospective observational study. 41 Currently, research is underway to identify how to best deliver training 42 incorporating an adult learning theory-based curriculum. Until further evidence is available, a dedicated nurse to support individual patient's training focusing on adherence to guideline recommendations and antiseptic procedures is currently recommended.…”

“…4,5,6 The nurse has a leading role in training patients to carry out their treatment at home through education and close follow-up to achieve good outcomes and prevent complications. 7,8,9,10 Training tools such as Targeted Education ApproaCH to Improve Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes provide an education program for PD trainers and their patients. 8 An essential step in the early phase of PD therapy is selecting the proper patient, including evaluating his/her health status and functional capacity.…”

Besides, the recommendations of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis standardise teaching practices for nursing staff (trainers) and the patient or caregiver 2,7,9,11,12 ; however, one weakness of this guide is that it does not include a specific inventory of patient's abilities to perform PD treatment at home.…”
