Tapping the potential of a glucosamine polysaccharide-diatomaceous earth hybrid adsorbent in the solid phase extraction of a persistent organic pollutant and toxic pesticide 4,4′-DDT from water

Abstract: A chitosan (a glucosamine polysaccharide)-diatomaceous earth hybrid was studied for the adsorption of 4,4′-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (4,4′-DDT), a persistent organic pollutant and organochlorine pesticide compound from water.

“…The Langmuir isotherm equation is commonly used to model monolayer adsorption on a homogeneous adsorbent surface. The linear form of the Langmuir isotherm is calculated as follows 22 : where q e is the equilibrium adsorption capacity (mg/g), C e is the equilibrium concentration of adsorbed AFB1 solution (mg/L), q m is the maximum adsorption capacity at the saturation of a monolayer (mg/g) and b is the Langmuir constant (L/mg).…”

“…Although many nanomaterials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) ( Xu et al, 2022a ), carbon nanotubes ( Sajid et al, 2022 ), etc. are used to effectively remove drugs from water, traditional adsorption materials such as bentonite ( Guan et al, 2022 ), kaolinite ( Gao et al, 2022 ), diatomaceous earth ( Kodali et al, 2022 ), activated carbon ( Balarak and McKay, 2021 ) and clay minerals ( Zhao et al, 2022 ) are still the mainstream adsorbents in the market.…”

“…There are hydroxy groups on the surface of DE particles, which can be utilized to functionalize DE with various functional groups/chains. These properties make DE an ideal support material for adsorbents, such as metal adsorbents [22][23][24], toxin adsorbents [25][26][27], superhydrophobic coatings/materials [28,29], oil-spill adsorbents from water bodies [30], and also in drug delivery [31][32][33][34].…”
