Tapered silicon core fibers with nano-spikes for optical coupling via spliced silica fibers

Abstract: Abstract:Reported here is the fabrication of tapered silicon core fibers possessing a nanospike input that facilitates their seamless splicing to conventional single mode fibers. A proofof-concept 30 µm cladding diameter fiber-based device is demonstrated with nano-spike coupling and propagation losses below 4 dB and 2 dB/cm, respectively. Finite-elementmethod-based simulations show that the nano-spike coupling losses could be reduced to below 1 dB by decreasing the cladding diameters down to 10 µm. Such effic… Show more

“…In this regard, we report here the fabrication of tapered SCFs with nano-spikes and show their robust integration with single mode fibers (SMF) [9]. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate a 30 µm clad diameter SMF-SCF device with nano-spike coupling loss of 3.7 dB and propagation loss of 1.66 dB/cm.…”

“…A second step was then used to form the nano-spike at the end of the SCF by adjusting the tapering parameters, as detailed in Ref. [14]. The section of the SCF attached to the nano-spike can then be cleaved and spliced to a SMF that has also been tapered to have a matching outer diameter, as illustrated in the inset of Fig.…”

“…Similar to the planar silicon waveguides, these small core SCFs have shown great potential for nonlinear applications [13]. More recently, the tapering process has been extended to produce nano-spike couplers at the input facet of the SCFs, enabling robust fusion splicing to conventional single mode fibers (SMFs), while retaining efficient optical coupling into the silicon core [14]. This work has opened a route for the SCFs to find use in practical, allfiber integrated nonlinear photonic systems.…”

“…The literature on Group IV semiconductor-core glass fibers is now significant [1][2][3][4][5], including processing improvements [6][7][8] and device demonstrations [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. There are also reports on both SiGe alloy and II-VI core fibers [18][19][20][21][22][23], one including low temperature photoluminescence [21].…”
