Tantulocarida versus Thecostraca: inside or outside? First attempts to resolve phylogenetic position of Tantulocarida using gene sequences

Abstract: Complete 18S rDNA sequences of two species of the Tantulocarida Arcticotantulus pertzovi (Basipodellidae) and Microdajus tchesunovi (Microdajidae) were obtained and used for estimating the relationship of the class with other Crustacea. This constitutes the first use of tantulocaridan gene sequences, and we conclude that the Tantulocarida are very close relatives of the class Thecostraca, which comprise cirripedes, ascothoracidans and the enigmatic facetotectans. With much lower confidence, the Tantulocarida a… Show more

“…All three conclusions have been partially revealed in previous molecular reconstructions of arthropod or pancrustacean phylogenies 45 , 51 , 52 , but the consequences have never been discussed in detail. It is remarkable that our tree, based on a partial 18S rRNA gene alone (1.7 kb), shows almost the same topology as that of Regier et al .…”

“…Pancrustacea (Hexapoda plus Crustacea) hypothesis is supported here, and, for the first time, the position of Tantulocarida is demonstrated to be a sister-group (outside not inside) to Thecostraca (as compared to the discussion of Petrunina et al . 52 ).…”

“…More recently, the enigmatic parasitic Tantulocarida were added within Thecostraca based on analysis of a single ribosomal gene (Petrunina et al, 2014), however, other relationships within Pancrustacea differed significantly from those outlined herein. In light of the paucity of data other than ribosomal genes, we remain ambivalent about including Tantulocarida.…”

“…Stygobitic tantulocarids have been described parasitizing harpacticoid copepods in anchialine caves of the Canary Islands (Boxshall & Huys, 1989;). Recent molecular phylogenetic investigations have suggested a close relation between tantulocarids and the subclass Thecostraca, and that Tantulocarida might in fact belong within this subclass as a sister group to Cirripedia (barnacles, Petrunina et al, 2014). However, the precise phylogenetic position of Tantulocarida still awaits further investigation (Petrunina et al, 2014).…”
