Tantalum Carbide or Niobium Carbide Catalyzed Oxidation of Sulfides with Hydrogen Peroxide: Highly Efficient and Chemoselective Syntheses of Sulfoxides and Sulfones

Abstract: The oxidation of sulfides with 30% hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by tantalum carbide provided the corresponding sulfoxides in high yields. The reaction of sulfides with 30% hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by niobium carbide efficiently afforded the corresponding sulfones. These catalysts can easily be recovered from the reaction mixture and may be repeatedly used as catalysts for the oxidation without losing their activity.

“…These combined advantages make the Nb-in-C complex particularly suitable for practical electrochemical ORR catalysis. Obviously, such niobium-carbon structures also have the potential to be used in other catalysis reactions such as the decomposition of ammonia 35 , the catalytic CO oxidation reactions 36 and the catalytic oxidation of sulphides 37 . Our modified arc-discharge equipment can be continuously operated by circulating the methane gas to reach a productivity of 50-100 g per hour, which is attractive for practical industrial applications.…”

“…The high concentration of structural vacancies in TiN 0.3 favors its diffusion and consequently increases its catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of TiN 0.3 also increases with the growth of the interface area [12][13][14]. Furthermore, the attraction of C atoms from TaC to N vacancy (V N ) sites in TiN 0.3 may influence the diffusion behavior of all atoms in the TaCTiN 0.3 system in comparison with the TaC-TiN system.…”
