Tannins in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy

Abstract: Abstract:This study provides an up to date review of tannins, specifically quebracho, in mineral processing and metallurgical processes. Quebracho is a highly useful reagent in many flotation applications, acting as both a depressant and a dispersant. Three different types of quebracho are mentioned in this study; quebracho "S" or Tupasol ATO, quebracho "O" or Tupafin ATO, and quebracho "A" or Silvafloc. It should be noted that literature often refers simply to "quebracho" without distinguishing a specific typ… Show more

“…In the first step, material is usually leached in aqueous solutions of sulphuric [9,10,13], oxalic acid [12,14], or alkalis [15]. Then, germanium may be recovered from solutions by precipitation with tannic acid [10,16,17], sulphide [18], catechol-cetyltrimethylammonium [18], GeCl 4 distillation [4,19,20], solvent extraction [15,[21][22][23], ion-exchange techniques [24][25][26][27]. Pyrometallurgical methods like vacuum metallurgical process [28,29] may be also applied.…”

“…Sodium silicate commonly known as water glass and its solution with inorganic salt ions, are often applied in fluorite flotation to depress silica [12,13]. Otherwise, tannins are presented as strong depressants of the carbonated gangue, in this way quebracho tree stands out as especially energetic tannin in the calcium carbonate depression [14]. Reagents such as starch are particularly effective for reducing common gangue constituents in fluorspar ores [15].…”

“…With a total of 22 papers covering both fundamental and applied research, this issue covers all aspects of hydrometallurgy from comprehensive review articles [1,2] [12][13][14], nanoparticle preparation [15,16] and the development of novel and/or environmentally sustainable methods for the treatment of wastes and effluents for the recovery of valuable metals and products [17][18][19][20][21][22]. The number and of quality of submissions makes this Special Issue of Metals the most successful to date.…”
