Tannic acid mediated induction of apoptosis in human glioma Hs 683 cells

Abstract: Tannic acid (TA), a natural plant compound, is known to induce the death of cancer cells in various types of cancer. The present study was designed with the aim of exploring the effects of tannic acid in vitro on HS 683, a glioma cell line, and to study the mechanism involved in the induction of cytotoxicity and apoptosis by TA. TA exhibited maximum cytotoxic activity against the Hs 683 cell line. Nuclear morphology, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining and annexin V/propidium iodide apoptosis assaying of Hs… Show more

“…This condition contains TA as a crosslinking agent. TA has been shown, over years, antitumoral activity against several cancer cell lines ( Nam et al., 2001 ; Karakurt and Adali, 2016 ; Zhang et al., 2018 ; Nagesh et al., 2020 ). As previously stated, despite being widely used for bone-related studies, the hereby used Saos-2 cell line derive from human osteosarcoma, a well-known type of bone cancer.…”

“…There are previous reports of tannic acid preventing breast cancer, 49,50 ovarian cancer, 51 gingival cancer 52 and brain cancer. 24 However, the exact mechanism or pathway by which tannic acid kills colon cancer cells was not fully understood.…”

“…22,23 It was stated in previous reports that TA leads to apoptosis via ROS generation in human glioma cells. 24 It has been suggested that the combined effect of resveratrol and TA triggers apoptosis in colon cancer cells. 25 However, the cellular pathway by which TA alone leads to colon cancer cell death and the role of ROS and signaling cascade of colon cancer cells have not been explored yet.…”

“…The combination of tannic acid with As 2 O 3 induced apoptosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) HL-60 cell line through the activation of the caspase cascade, cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, and release of cytochrome c [78]. Treated with GT, HS 683, a glioma cell line, showed an activation of pro-caspase 3 and caspase 9, cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased intracellular ROS production [79].…”
