Gender determination is the first step for biological identification. With the widespread use of machine learning algorithms (MLA) for diagnosis, the significance of applying them also in gender determination studies has become apparent. This study has therefore aimed at determining gender from the parameters obtained out of magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the cranio-cervical junction and cervical-spinal canal by using MLA. MRI of the craniocervical junction and cervical-spinal canal of 110 men and 110 women were included in this study. The 15 parameters were tested with Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA) algorithms. Accuracy (Acc), Specificity (Spe), Sensitivity (Sen), F1 score (F1), Matthews-correlation coefficient (Mcc) values were used as performance criteria. The Acc, Spe, Sen, F1, and Mcc were found to be 1.00 in the LR, LDA, QDA and RF algorithms. The ratios of the Acc, Spe, Sen, and F1 were 0.98, and of the Mcc was 0.96 in the DT algorithm. It was found that the ratio between the SHAP analyzer of the RF algorithm and the belt of the ratio between the arch of the atlas and the anterior-posterior distance of the dens (R3) parameter had a higher contribution to the estimation of gender compared to other parameters. It was concluded that the LDA, QDA, LR, DT and RF algorithms applied to the parameters acquired from the MRI of the craniocervical junction and cervical-spinal canal, could determine the gender with very high accuracy.

Coxal bone, which is included in the structure of the pelvic skeleton, is in close relationship with the pelvic organs and great vessels. The aim of this study is to show the harmony between morphometric measurements using the correlation technique, based on the idea that the proportional harmony in different parts of our body will also be in the coxal bone. In the study, 95 dry coxal bone belonging to the Turkish population were examined. In dry bones of adults, the distance between anterior superior iliac spine and posterior superior iliac spine (A), distance between anterior inferior iliac spine and posterior inferior iliac spine (B), distance between anterior superior iliac spine and anterior inferior iliac spine (C), distance between posterior superior iliac spine and posterior inferior iliac spine (D), symphysial surface length (E), symphysial surface width (F), ischial tuberosity width (G), ischion-pubis arm thickness (H), coxal bone length (I), distance between the symphysial surface and the most protruding part of the ischial tuberosity (J) were measured with caliper. There was no statistical difference in the comparison of different measurements made on the right and left coxal bone in our study. In correlation studies, between (B) and (A) (r: 0.566), between (I) and (A) (r: 0.595), between (J) and (A) (r: 0.600), between (E) and (J) (r: 0.563) measurements showed a positive correlation relationship. In this study, excellent agreement was found in different morphometric measurements in coxal bone.

Objectives: The determination of sex and estimation of age are parameters that help in the identification of individuals in all fields of forensic science. This study aimed to calculate standard measurements according to sex and age in morphometric analysis of the 4th costa using multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT). Methodology: Measurements were taken on MSCT images of patients aged 20-70 years, who had undergone CT imaging for various reasons. Using the morphometric characteristics of the 4th costa and junction with the spine on the thorax CT images, measurements were taken of the angulation of the right and left 4th costa, the distance between the sternum and the vertebra, the distance between the two costae, the distance between the two ends of the right and left 4th costa separately, and the depth of the two costae. Adding age and gender to these variables, 10 parameters were evaluated in total. Results: As a result of the analyses, the mean values of right costovertebral angle, sternum-vertebra distance, inter-costal distance, left and right costa lengths, and left costa depth were found to be statistically significant according to sex. In the differentiation of age groups, the right costovertebral angle, the sternum-vertebra distance, and the right and left costa lengths were found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study of a Turkish population showed that the morphometric properties of the 4th costa show differences in the determination of age and sex. With the benefit of these differences, it is possible to differentiate males and females, and even age groups. As there are societal differences, standard morphometric values have to be determined so it will be necessary to conduct these studies more widely and obtain appropriate standard values for every population.
