SUMMARYThe increased availability of soil water is important for the management of non-irrigated orange orchards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the availability of soil water in a Haplorthox (Rhodic Ferralsol) under different tillage systems used for orchard plantation, mulch management and rootstocks in a "Pêra" orange orchard in northwest Paraná, Brazil. An experiment in a split-split-plot design was established in 2002, in an area cultivated with Brachiaria brizantha grass in which three tillage systems (no tillage, conventional tillage and strip-tillage) were used for orchard plantation. This grass was mowed twice a year between the rows, representing two mulch managements in the split plots (no mulching and mulching in the plant rows). The split-split-plots were represented by two rootstocks ("Rangpur" lime and "Cleopatra" mandarin). The soil water content in the plant rows was evaluated in the 0-20 cm layer in 2007 and at 0-20 and 20-40 cm in 2008-2009. The effect of soil tillage systems prior to implantation of orange orchards on soil water availability was less pronounced than mulching and the rootstocks. The soil water availability was lower when "Pêra" orange trees were grafted on "Cleopatra" mandarin than on "Rangpur" lime rootstocks. Mulching had a positive influence on soil water availability in the sandy surface layer (0-20 cm) and sandy clay loam subsurface (20-40 cm) of the soil in the spring. The production of B. brizantha between the rows and residue disposal in the plant rows as mulch increased water availability to the "Pêra" orange trees.Index terms: Brachiaria brizantha, no tillage, soil management, soil texture, time domain reflectometry.(

The development of techniques for rapid and uniform emergence of seeds is the alternative to the diversification of citrus rootstocks that were little used due to low vigor compared to 'Rangpur' lime, the main rootstock used in Brazil, but it has shown susceptible to serious disease problems, such as the citrus sudden death (CSD). The addition of the hydrogel polymer to the substrate can increase the uniformity of seed emergence and reduce the time for the production of rootstocks due to the increase in water availability. Thus, the study was done to evaluate the formulation of the substrate with the hydrogel polymer on the uniformity of emergence and early growth of citrus rootstocks. The factorial scheme 3 × 2 × 2 was used, with the factors: Three rootstocks ['Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck), Poncirus trifoliata (L.) and 'Sunki' mandarin (Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tanaka); two formulations of substrate (with and without 0.4 g per container of Hidroplan-EB/HyB-M ® polymer and two environments (greenhouse with an average maximum temperature of 36.6°C and minimum of 17.2°C and growth chamber programmed with temperature to 25°C and a photoperiod of 12 h, distributed in a completely randomized design with four replications and 35 seeds per plot. The emergency velocity index (EVI), the percentage of emergence and early growth of rootstocks were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% of probability. The addition of the polymer to the substrate favored the percentage of emergence and EVI of 'Rangpur' lime and of mandarin 'Sunki' seeds in the growth chamber. The 'Rangpur' lime was the rootstock which presented the highest percentage of emergence and uniformity in both environments. The addition of the hydrogel polymer to substrate favored initial growth of citrus rootstocks.

RESUMO -A expansão do cajueiro-anão-precoce no Brasil vem promovendo baixa diversidade genética dos genótipos usados como enxerto e porta-enxerto, ensejando vulnerabilidade da cultura às vicissitudes bióticas como a resinose (Lasiodiplodia theobromae), principal doença do cajueiro no semiárido nordestino. Estima-se que cerca de meio milhão de mudas de cajueiro-anão-precoce sejam produzidas anualmente, sendo a grande maioria delas produzida de propágulos enxertados sobre plântulas oriundas de sementes do clone CCP 06. A principal estratégia de manejo da resinose é o plantio de clones resistentes. Entretanto, entre os aspectos que contribuem para sucessivas epidemias da resinose, destaca-se a falta de estudos de interações genotípicas entre enxerto e porta-enxerto. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito de combinações de clones de cajueiro-anão-precoce usados como enxerto e porta-enxerto na incidência da resinose. Sementes de plantas de polinização aberta de seis clones selecionados foram usadas para produção de porta-enxerto. Os clones comerciais CCP 76 (suscetível) e BRS 226 (resistente) foram usados como enxertos. O experimento foi realizado obedecendo ao delineamento de blocos ao acaso, no esquema fatorial 2 x 6, com quatro repetições e nove plantas por parcela do tipo quadrada, sob condições de elevada pressão da doença, em Pio IX-PI. Três anos após o plantio definitivo, a incidência (I) e a severidade (S) (escala de 0 a 4) da resinose foram superiores no clone CCP 76 (I = 97% e S=2,10) em relação ao BRS 226 (I = 33% e S=0,36), independentemente do porta-enxerto. O clone CP 06 como porta-enxerto foi o único que reduziu a incidência e a severidade da resinose, independentemente do genótipo do enxerto. Este clone foi capaz de reduzir a severidade da resinose do clone CCP 76 (S=2,10) como enxerto em quase 30%. This may contribute to enhance crop vulnerability to some biological harm such as the infection by the gummosis fungus agent, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, the most important disease of this plant in semi-arid north-eastern Brazil. It has been estimated that half a million graft plants of EDC are yearly produced in Brazil, most of them obtained by grafting over seedling from CCP 06 clone as root-stock. The only means of managing gummosis is by the use of genetically resistant clones. However, the lack of studies on the scion and stock genotypic interactions has contributed to outbreak of successive gummosis epidemics.
