Tandem mass spectral studies of the fragmentation pathways of organotin compounds of general formula R3SnR?

Abstract: Positive ion-electron impact (EI) mass spectra of organotin compounds of the type R 3 SnR', where R = Ph, nÀBu, nÀPe and R' = allyl, vinyl, H and Ph, have been recorded. The spectra were also examined by tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) in order to establish fragmentation reaction mechanisms for compounds bearing mixed substituents. Fragmentation patterns of six organotin compounds, based on precursor-product ion relationships are proposed. Significant differences were found in the reaction pathways of organot… Show more

“…Some alkyls prefer the NL of alkenes ( tert ‐butyl and isopropyl), whereas others favour the loss of alcohols and aldehydes (methyl and ethyl). Concerning the oxidation state of tin, it is changes between Sn(IV) and Sn(II) in agreement with previous studies performed with either ESI21, 28 or EI 24–27. Almost all observed ions are even‐electron ions with rare exceptions, e.g.…”

“…Before the advent of ESI, the conventional electron ionization (EI) was the ionization technique of choice in the analysis of more volatile organotin compounds. EI fragmentation patterns of simple organotin compounds with one to four aryl or alkyl substituents have been described 24–27. The typical neutral losses are alkenes and the majority of fragment ions are even‐electron ions except for the molecular radical‐cation M +• and diaryl‐ and dialkyltin radical ions, which are similar to those in soft ionization techniques.…”

“…3,8,9 For example it has been shown 9 that the nature of substituents (aromatic, aliphatic, unsaturated) significantly changes the fragmentation/reaction pathways for compounds of the type R 3 SnR', where R' can be alkyl, aryl, vinyl or allyl. These studies showed that the major fragment ions in the EI mass spectrum of Bu 3 SnVinyl are SnVinyl and SnH 2 Vinyl , whereas for Bu 3 SnAllyl, Bu 3 SnPr and Bu 4 Sn the major fragment ions occur at m/z 177 and 179, corresponding to BuSn and BuSnH 2 respectively.…”

“…The possible effect of a double bond alpha to the Sn-C bond on stabilizing the resultant fragment ion was examined by investigating the mass spectrum of Pe 3 SnPh. 9 The fragmentation pathway of this compound was found to be similar to that of Bu 3 SnVinyl.…”
