Tandem intercalation strategy for single-layer nanosheets as an effective alternative to conventional exfoliation processes

Abstract: Simple and effective generation of transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) in a single-layer form has been a challenging task. Here we present a tandem molecular intercalation (TMI) as a new exfoliation concept for producing single-layer TMCs from multi-layer colloidal TMC nanostructures in solution phase. TMI requires tandem Lewis base intercalates, where short 'initiator' molecules first intercalate into TMCs to open up the interlayer gap, and the long 'primary' molecules then bring the gap to full width so th… Show more

“…High-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging in an aberration-corrected STEM has revealed a high concentration of the zigzag-like superlattices identified as strained metallic 1T phase in the exfoliated WS 2 nanosheets. [38] and (e-k) adapted with permission from Jeong et al [39].…”

“…Secondly, the expanded MoS 2 flakes are intercalated by alkali naphthalenide followed by exfoliation in ultrasonicated water operated at low power to avoid fragmentation of the sheets. Figure 3a- [39] reported a tandem molecular intercalation (TMI) strategy (figure 3e) where a short initiator alkylamine intercalate expands the interlayer gap of TMDCs for an efficient intercalation of another long primary alkylamine. Owing to the difference in chain length, a bilayer arrangement with empty spaces between intercalates is adopted to reduce van der Waals force between them and spontaneous exfoliation occurs finally to yield single-layer TMDCs.…”

“…Thus it is possible to obtain few layers or even monolayer from their bulk counterparts. [1][2][3] Among various kinds of the layered materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) stand out because some of them exhibit even much more exciting properties compared to the star material graphene. For instance, MoS 2 monolayer was found a semiconductor with sizeable direct band gap of about 1.8-1.9 eV, 4-6 overcoming the disadvantage of zero band gap in graphene when applied in the field effect transistors (FETs) and optoelectronic devices.…”

“…There are few studies on thin-layers of ZrX2 and they are obtained by chemical 59 exfoliation (nanosheets and nanodiscs) [18,19], grown by chemical vapor deposition (nanobelts and 60 flakes) [20][21][22] or by epitaxy [23].…”
