Tanaidacea (Crustacea) of the north-east Atlantic: the subfamily Pseudotanainae (Pseudotanaidae) and the family Nototanaidae

Abstract: Sixteen species of the tanaidacean subfamily Pseudotanainae and three of the family Nototanaidae have been recorded from shallow and deep waters in the north-east Atlantic. Six new species of Pseudotanais, and c.he new genera Mystriocentrus, Parapseudotanais and Bathytanaissus are described. The species Pseudotunais aznis is re-described, and a cladistic analysis of the 'a@nis' species-group is presented. Pseudotanais is a eurybathic genus and individuals of this taxon are common in the region. The Nototanaida… Show more

“…Pseudotanaididae appears to be a fairly stable family, despite concerns stated by Bird and Holdich (1989) and by the lack of unifying characters. The logic behind establishing two subfamilies (Pseudotanaidinae and Cryptocopinae) has merit owing to a higher Bremer support value for the individual clades.…”

“…Number of ventral setae on cheliped fixed finger ( Bird and Holdich 1989 ; 0=multiple setae, 1=three setae, 2=two setae, 3=one seta, 4=no setae). Several authors use this character for species identification and it seems to be fairly consistent within the genera, according to the literature.…”

“…Data from the BIOICE project has greatly expanded our knowledge of the benthic invertebrates in this region, their taxonomy, distribution and diversity (e.g. Bird and Holdich 1989;Svavarsson 1997;Weisshappel and Svavarsson 1998;Schu− chert 2000Schu− chert , 2001Weisshappel 2000Weisshappel , 2001Sigvaldadóttir 2002;Parapar 2003Parapar , 2006Bird 2004a,b;Stransky and Svavarsson 2006;Brix and Svavarsson 2010; Moreira and Parapar 2012;Dauvin et al 2012;Parapar et al 2012;Meißner et al 2014;Schnurr et al 2014). “…The number of sternal setae on cheliped fixed finger (species-level character: Bird & Holdich, 1989: Bird & Holdich, 1988: 1598 also increase in number from manca to adult but do not change further with age. Uropod articles (family-level character: Lang, 1973: 223) are not fully separated until maturity and the exopod articles separate last or not at all.…”
