Tamm–Horsfall protein isolated from urine of pregnant and non‐pregnant women has similar oligosaccharides

Abstract: The results of our carbohydrate analysis together with previous data on amino acid analysis indicate that Tamm-Horsfall protein and uromodulin are identical or very similar glycoproteins.

“…This glycoprotein was rediscovered in 1985 by Muchmore and Decker [9]as uromodulin which was isolated from the urine of pregnant women using lectin adherence columns. Later studies based on amino acid [10]and carbohydrate [11]analysis have shown that THP and uromodulin are identical or almost identical glycoproteins.…”

“…THP obtained from Sda+ and Sda– donors showed similar sugar moieties [11]. No differences between THP and uromodulin in terms of their reactivity with recombinant human interleukin (IL) 1α, recombinant human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and some serum proteins were found [11].…”

“…In contrast, uromodulin is markedly reduced or even undetectable in hypertensive preeclampsia patients (41,42). Notably, most if not all of the in vitro immune suppressive properties of uromodulin were later found to be shared by THP isolated from healthy male urine, suggesting a functional commonality between THP and uromodulin (20,35). Despite these intriguing observations, controversies persisted regarding the role of THP in immunity.…”
