Tamarind Seed Extract Enhances Epidermal Wound Healing

Abstract: Traditional healing power of tamarind fruits and the established antioxidant activity of the seeds drive the present study. Wound healing efficiency of tamarind seed was evaluated. Different solvents: phosphate buffer saline (PBS), water, methanol and ethanol were used to prepare the extract. Circular wound was inflicted on the nape. 10 µl of 5 µg/ml of extract was applied topically twice daily. Wound area was measured using Adobe ®Photoshop C3 Extended version and the percentage of wound reduction was calcula… Show more

“…The activation of proproliferative pathways and signal molecules known to be involved in cancer might be aware of using Tamarind xyloglucans for wound healing, drug vehicle, digestive disorders, or dry eye syndrome. But concern is appeased with moderate activation of these molecules in vitro as well as the results of various in vivo studies that proofed the lack of carcinogenicity [11, 47] and the benefit for wound healing [16]. …”

“…Tamarind seed xyloglucans were shown to reduce UV-induced repression of the delayed-type hypersensitivity response as well as the production of IL-10 in mice [10]. Additionally in vitro and in vivo studies are available dealing with the antitumor and immune stimulating activity [11, 12], NO production [13], healing properties of dry eye syndrome [14, 15], and cutaneous wounds [16]. Moreover tamarind xyloglucans protected human skin from immune suppression by inhibition of UV-radiation-induced dendritic cell loss from the epidermis [17].…”

“…Tamarindus indica extract has alkaloid, saponin, and tannin. Alkaloid is known to assist in the epithelization of wound and chemotaxis in fibrosis [ 36 ]. Saponin significantly stimulates angiogenesis by modifying the balance of protease/protease inhibitor secretion in human endothelial vascular cells [ 36 38 ].…”

Phyllanthus emblica extract has antioxidant potentials as well as antimicrobial activity which can be a good therapeutic agent for accelerating the wound healing process [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…The prepared ointments are effective and are comparable with the positive controls in reducing the inflammation on the inflamed hind paws of rabbits. Sweet tamarind showed rapid reduction of inflammation because of the phytochemicals it contains such as alkaloids, flavonoids and flavonols, which are known to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, promote healing and repair skin damage [4]. Alkaloids also occur in the leaves, pulp and bark of pure extract function as photoprolectants, modulate antibacterial effects and reduction of inflammation [5].…”
