Talking Safety: Health and Safety Communication and Safety Climate in Subcontracted Construction Workgroups

Abstract: The practice of subcontracting out construction work has been identified as a contributing factor in poor work health and safety (WHS) performance. Relatively few studies have considered the processes through which safety climates develop within subcontracted workgroups. This study sought to examine the relationship between intra-group communication relating to WHS and the workgroup safety climate. Data was collected from 39 subcontracted workgroups in the Australian construction industry, using social network… Show more

“…Interestingly, subcontractor/supplier perceptions are different to other groups apart from the client. This is important and interesting since it reflects recent research by Loosemore (2014) and in particular Lingard et al (2019) who noted subcontractor's disempowerment in construction projects, the practice of subcontracting as a contributing factor in poor safety performance, the tendency for different sub climates to develop in project supply chains and the need for better safety-related communication between group members, to reduce the potentially damaging variance in perceptions.…”

“…Moreover, it has a significant influence on workers' awareness and behavior about safety [30][31][32][33]36,37]. In particular, in the case of construction sites where workers' unsafe behavior is considered the biggest cause of accidents [38], it is important to improve workers' safety behavior and attitudes by creating a safety climate within the organization [39][40][41] to reduce accidents. Fang, Chen, and Wong [42] analyzed the correlation between safety climate and safety behavior in construction sites in Hong Kong.…”

“…As a result, the safety climate is affected by safety behavior. Lingard, Pirzadeh, and Oswald [41] analyzed the correlation between the social network metrics of subcontracted construction workgroups and the safety climate. As a result, communication skills play a pivotal role to improve the safety climate.…”

“…Descriptive analysis was adopted to summarize the basic network characteristics. Correlation and linear regression analysis were used to uncover the relationships between network constructs and safety climate [78,104,105], project performance [7,60,115], management efficiency [69], individual performance [111,129], company's profit [66], organizational competitiveness [51], and individual coordination [74,75,86]. However, considering that social actors are embedded within the social environment [150], the observed correlation in linear regression analyses may result from the inherently interdependent nature of social relations [151].…”
