Talking Points of Green and Sustainable Palm Oil Mill System in Malaysia

M F M A Zamri*,
A Akhiar,
A H Shamsuddin

Abstract: Todays, the palm oil milling industry (POMI) has been given serious attention due to environmental issues that arise from the milling processes. Greenhouse gas emission, wastewater quality, waste management plan and energy efficiency are the main POMI issues that contribute to the environmental problems. Critically, this issues could bring a serious impact in sustaining Malaysia palm oil industry in current global economic competitiveness. Moreover, the stringent trading standard for palm oil industry has forc… Show more

“…The RE project previously launched under the National Key Economic Area (NKEA) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program for POM concluded with low effect outcomes (Chuen & Yusoff, 2012). The developed RE facilities in POM are not consistently operated, and the number of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants is reduced as the funding for the program ends (Zamri et al, 2019). Besides, Omar et al (2018) reported that the existing method of conventional steam sterilization is inefficient for FFB breakdown and inactivation.…”

“…Malaysia, the world's second-largest palm oil producer, has a plentiful supply of palm oil biomass resources. More than 100 million tons of palm oil fresh fruit bunches (FFB) were processed annually from Malaysia's 446 palm oil mills (POM; Zamri et al, 2019). As a key product of palm oil FFB, the POM operation primarily extracts crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel oil (PKO).…”

“…The average molecular weight of OPTS is approximately 865 kDa according to the testing outcome. The molecular weight of OPTS indicates it's as a high molecular weight (greater than 100 kDa) polymer (Zamri, Mohd Akhiar and Halim Shamsuddin, 2019).…”
