Talaromyces atroroseus in HIV and non-HIV patient: A first report from Indonesia

Abstract: We performed morphology, molecular study and antifungal susceptibility test on 10 Talaromyces sp. isolates: eight clinical isolates (human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and non-HIV-patient) and two isolates from rats. All strains produced red soluble pigment and microscopically showed Penicillium-like structure in room temperature and yeast-like structure in 37°C. Based on molecular analysis, nine isolates were identified as Talaromyces atroroseus (including the isolates from rats) and one as T. marneffei. Our … Show more

“…Thus, based on morphological identification alone, we were able to prove that the fungi isolated from the skin lesions were H. capsulatum and Talaromyces sp. Both fungi were then analyzed using a molecular method, and the Talaromyces species was found to be Talaromyces atroroseus (Surja et al, 2020), while the Histoplasma species was confirmed to be H. capsulatum (data not shown).…”

“…Talaromyces marneffei infection is also reported from HIV-infected individuals in Southeast Asia [2]. It is worth noting that a newer species known as Talaromyces atroroseus, which has a different pattern of antifungal susceptibility to T. marneffei, was reported in AIDS patients [14]. Emergomyces africanus, Emergomyces orientalis, and Emergomyces pasteurianus are 3 dimorphic fungal species that cause emergomycosis.…”
