Taking the human body seriously

Abstract: The intention of this article is to open up a dialogue on the importance of giving explicit attention to the human body when studying information systems phenomena. The human body influences the ways in which a person interprets and uses technology. Although we bodily engage with our world (people, things and places), we generally take our bodies for granted, and view them as passive recipients in studies on information technologies and organisational phenomena. Theoretical frameworks built on embodiment indic… Show more

“…This tradition of post-phenomenology draws on a relational ontology problematizing the division between subject and object or human and technology and instead viewing it as co-constitutive (Rosenberg and Verbeek, 2015). It goes beyond other phenomenological accounts (Riemer and Johnston, 2014) being interested in not only how technologies extend our sensory-motor experiences (Chughtai, 2020) but also how different "human (body)-technology-world relations" are enacted.…”

“…Our interpretation is that, consciously or not, the government plays on the immediate benefits and downplays long-term risks in the equation considered by the privacy paradox while inducing self-discipline. As a consequence this case is also an opportunity to research changing bodily behavior of stop-covid adopters (Chughtai, 2020;Leclercq-Vandelannoitte, 2014) and assess risks if the app lives long enough.…”

“…Future research could explore the roles of subjectivity and objectivity in virtual wine tasting to complement our sensuous storytelling (Vannini et al, 2010) with rich sensory data. Such a study could follow contemporary perspectives like sensory ethnography (Pink, 2009) and somatic perspectives in information systems (Chughtai, 2021).…”
