“…Adopting neutral realism with respect to taniwha pūrākau is, in my view, an effective way to move towards achieving that goal. In particular, it enables avoidance of the two types of response that Kingsbury rightly argues we ought to avoid, "both the kind of mockery evinced in the media response to Karutahi and the merely tolerant and potentially patronising response of John Key to Horotiu" (Kingsbury, 2022). “…She acknowledges that there is an apparently insurmountable barrier for non-Māori, particularly those who are sceptical about the supernatural, to regard taniwha as real. But, Kingsbury argues, regarding taniwha as real is a small step towards respecting te ao Māori, which is something we ought to do (Kingsbury, 2022). She therefore proposes a particular way of taking taniwha discourse seriously that attempts to steer a middle path between taking it literally and giving an instrumentalist interpretation of it.…”

“…However, Hikuroa has made significant strides in bridging the gap in this discourse, highlighting the importance of Taniwha puuraakau (stories) as hazard prevention (Hikuroa, 2020). Despite Hikuroa's work to establish the reliability of Taniwha in the public zeitgeist, there is still a consistent divergence in what is considered "real", and whether conceptualising Taniwha in this way is appropriate (Kingsbury, 2022). Although there are clear tensions through co-management, bicultural values discourse, and Te Mana o Te Wai, these are ultimately the tools we have to give effect to iwi and hapuu values.…”
