Taking Advantage of Multiple Scattering to Communicate with Time-Reversal Antennas

Abstract: We present an experimental demonstration showing that, contrary to first intuition, the more scattering a mesoscopic medium is, the more information can be conveyed through it. We used a multiple input-multiple output configuration: a multichannel ultrasonic time-reversal antenna is used to transmit random series of bits simultaneously to different receivers which were only a few wavelengths apart. Whereas the transmission is free of error when multiple scattering occurs in the propagation medium, the error ra… Show more

“…As it will be shown later, the residual correlation existing between mixed terms in (12) should not be neglected, lest we overestimate the actual performance of the transmission system. In order to compute these four sets of terms, it is necessary to consider the mutual moments W i (ν 1 )W j (ν 2 ) .…”

“…The transmission coefficients are given by T ε (ω, −L, 0) = 1/a ε 1 (ω, 0) where a ε 1 satisfies (7) with the initial conditions (12). The asymptotic behavior of p tr as ε → 0 has been studied in [10,17,24].…”

“…ultrasound, underwater acoustics, see for instance the review [13]. Important potential applications have been proposed in various fields, for instance imaging [22,14] and communication [12]. A time-reversal mirror is, roughly speaking, a device which is capable of receiving a signal in time, keeping it in memory and sending it back into the medium in the reversed direction of time.…”
