Tailoring the luminescence of atomic clusters via ligand exchange reaction mediated post synthetic modification

Abstract: Modulation of luminescent characteristics of atomic gold clusters is an important technological challenge for broadening their futuristic applications. Post synthetic modification of histidine stabilized gold nanoclusters via ligand exchange reaction with cysteine is one such viable route towards modulation of the luminescence properties of gold nanoclusters.

“…The XPS spectra of N 1s and S 2s can embody the successful attachment of Cys to [Ru(H 2 dcbpy) 3 ]·Cl 2 . In Figure C, the peaks at 398.9, 399.5, and 401.3 eV corresponded to −NH 2 of Cys, OC–N from NH 2 –COOH bonding, and CN–C of the dipyridyl group, respectively. And the binding energies of S 2s at 160.5, 163.1, and 164.9 eV were ascribed to the −SH group of Cys (Figure D) . Subsequently, the successful connection between [Ru(H 2 dcbpy) 3 ]·Cl 2 and Cys was further analyzed from the FT-IR results (Figure E).…”

“…This eventually led to alteration in luminescence of the clusters, as ligands stabilizing the clusters are well known for playing key role in the luminescence properties of the clusters. The ligand exchange reaction, involving Au NCs was well validated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) ( Figure 5 a) [ 84 ].…”
