Tai Chi and Self‐Rated Quality of Sleep and Daytime Sleepiness in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Older adults with moderate sleep complaints can improve self-rated sleep quality through a 6-month, low- to moderate-intensity tai chi program. Tai chi appears to be effective as a nonpharmacological approach to sleep enhancement for sleep-disturbed elderly individuals.

“…A large body of research has begun investigating the efficacy of bright light therapy for synchronizing sleep and reducing nocturnal disturbances in institutionalized older adults with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (see reviews by Forbes et al, 2004;Skjerve, Bjorvatn, & Holsten, 2004). There is also a growing literature on the use of exercise and physical stimulation, including walking, weight training, Tai Chi, and acupressure, for improving sleep in older individuals (Chen, Lin, Wu, & Lin, 1999;King, Oman, Brassington, Bliwise, & Haskell, 1997;Li et al, 2004;Tsay, Rong, & Lin, 2003).…”
