Taguchi‐based analysis of polyamide 6/acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber/nanoclay nanocomposites: The role of processing variables

Abstract: Applying the Taguchi method of experimental design, we prepared various polyamide 6 (PA6)/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)/nanoclay nanocomposites under different processing conditions by melt mixing in an internal mixer. The effects of the processing variables, including the rotor speed, chamber temperature, and mixing order on the morphology, that is, the rubber particle size and interlayer distance, and the mechanical properties, that is, the tensile modulus and impact strength, were then investigated. … Show more

“…In other words, the simultaneous effects of two changing parameters on the desired response can be analyzed via a contour plot representation in x,y coordinates. In this plot, each colored area is indicative of a constant value of the responding variable ranging between the values predicted by the software [34]. The contour plots giving a diagrammatic representation of the values of the response are shown in (Figures 5a and 5b).…”

“…The nanocomposites containing Cloisite 30B (i.e., the S0N10 sample) show the original peak at 2θ = 4.88° disappearing and a new peak at lower 2θ forming around 2.1° corresponding to a d ‐spacing of ≈4.21 nm. The results of silane‐modified nanocomposites (S6N10 and S9N10) show an increase in d ‐spacing with respect to CB‐6 and CB‐9, corroborating a significance intercalation of NBR chains into the nanoclay galleries and providing enhanced interaction between the rubber chains and clay platelets due to the interlamellar silanization …”
