Taenia saginata: an unusual cause of post-appendectomy faecal fistula

Abstract: Post-appendectomy faecal fistula is a rare surgical complication, associated with significant morbidity. Taenia saginata infestation is one of the most common cestode infestation in the gastrointestinal tract. It makes many complications as obstruction, perforation, anastomotic leakage or appendicular stump dehiscence. The objective of our study is to report a very rare case of post appendectomy faecal fistula caused by taenia saginata infestation and was successfully treated conservatively.

“…23 The active motility of T. saginata tapeworms may also explain their reported emergence from an anastomotic leakage site and a post-appendectomy fecal fistula. 24,25 Interestingly, when reviewing the literature on complications related to Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm), which is the largest tapeworm that can infect humans (up to 25 m in length), 26 massive infections have been reported to cause intestinal obstruction and aberrant migrating proglottids may cause cholangitis or cholecystitis. 26…”
