Tackling the Electro-Topography of the Selves Through the Sphere Model of Consciousness

Abstract: In the current hypothesis paper, we propose a novel examination of consciousness and self-awareness through the neuro-phenomenological theoretical model known as the Sphere Model of Consciousness (SMC). Our aim is to create a practical instrument to address several methodological issues in consciousness research. We present a preliminary attempt to validate the SMC via a simplified electrophysiological topographic map of the Self. This map depicts the gradual shift from faster to slower frequency bands that ap… Show more

“…Using different induction methods such as psychedelics and other drugs, meditation, or flotation-REST [ 44 , 51 , 52 ], researchers have started to study altered states of consciousness and the underlying physiological systems dynamics. To sum up our study with exceptionally experienced meditators, our results are in accordance with the knowledge of other psychological or pharmacological induction types of altered states of consciousness where in peak states, subjective time and self are temporarily changed, reduced, or even lost [ 3 , 4 , 53 , 54 , 55 ]. That is, we show the same phenomenon in a quantitative way with the psychological induction technique of meditation, resulting in a joint modulation of the experience of self and of time.…”

“…To better understand Quadrato Motor Training and its effect on dyslexia, and to foster a more global perception of dyslexia as a condition affecting diverse aspects of the human experience [ 88 , 304 ], it is important to discuss the QMT within the framework of the Sphere Model of Consciousness [ 305 , 306 , 307 , 308 , 309 ]. The SMC is configured into three main axes—time, emotion, and self-determination—that represent the features of human experience.…”

“…First, QMT is intimately related to the Minimal Self, because its protocol is associated with an ongoing second-by-second mindful bodily awareness and waiting for upcoming instructions [ 230 , 285 ]. Importantly, the Minimal Self and embodied movement practices, such as the QMT, have been associated with slower frequency bands, especially alpha activity (see [ 309 , 310 ] for reviews), which is, in turn, closely related to creativity, relaxation and internal attention [ 143 , 144 , 235 , 251 , 255 , 256 , 257 ]. Second, the QMT constitutes an efficient way of distancing oneself from the habitual Narrative Self and, through strengthening one’s connection to the body with internally directed attention, it enables one to access the Minimal Self.…”

“…In this sense, Patrizio Paoletti Foundation designed a self-administered resilience-training program entitled “Ten Keys (i.e., suggestions) for Resilience” ( Table 1 ; Paoletti et al, 2022a ). The program was born in the framework of the Sphere Model of Consciousness (Paoletti, 2002a , b ; Paoletti et al, 2022c ; Paoletti and Ben Soussan, 2019 ), and was inspired by interdisciplinary literature (Fredrickson, 1998 ; Davidson, 2000 ; Korb, 2015 ; Paoletti, 2018 ; Tabibnia and Radecki, 2018 ). The 10 Keys for resilience are theoretical-practical indications describing how a resilient brain works.…”
