Renewable energies (REs) such as photovoltaic generation (PV) have been gaining attention in distribution systems. Recently, houses with PV and battery systems, as well as electric vehicles (EV) are expected to contribute to not only the suppression of global warming but also reducing electricity bill on the consumer side. However, there are numerous challenges with the introduction of REs at the demand side such as the actual output of REs often deviating from the forecasted output, which causes fluctuation of the power flow and this is challenging for the distribution or transmission system operator. For this challenge, it is expected that smart grid technology using controllable loads such as a fixed battery or EV battery, can suppress fluctuation of power flow. This paper presents a decision method of optimal scheduling of controllable loads to suppress the fluctuation of power flow by PV output in the smart home. An optimization method to cope with uncertainties such as variability of PV power and effective forecasting methods are considered in the proposed scheme. In order to decrease the expected operational cost and to validate the robustness for the uncertainty’s optimization approach, statistical analysis is executed for the optimal scheduling scheme. From the optimization results, the proposed methodology suppressed the fluctuation of power flow in the smart home and also minimized the consumer operational cost.

The turning, which consists of the removal of metal from the outer diameter of a rotating cylindrical workpiece, is one of the most common techniques for cutting, especially when finishing the product. The values of the cutting parameters, such as feed rate, cutting speed, and depth of cut, in a turning operation must be selected carefully to improve the profit of operations by enhancing productivity and reducing the total manufacturing cost for each component. A high vibration leads to poor surface finish and reduced productivity and shortens the tool life; therefore, this parameter should be controlled. In this study, an experiment is conducted to investigate the effects of these cutting parameters in the turning process of a workpiece, composed of AISI 1040 steel, using the response surface method. Statistical tools were used to design the experiments. These parameters are optimized by using analysis of variance, regression, and optimization techniques to achieve the condition of minimum vibration and chip frequency, therefore improving the surface roughness after the turning process.

Water distribution network (WDN) optimization has received special attention from various technicians and researchers, mainly due to its high costs of implementation, operation and maintenance. However, the low computational efficiency of most developed algorithms makes them difficult to apply in large-scale WDN design problems. This article presents a hybrid particle swarm optimization and tabu search (H-PSOTS) algorithm for WDN design. Incorporating tabu search (TS) as a local improvement procedure enables the H-PSOTS algorithm to avoid local optima and show satisfactory performance. Pure particle swarm optimization (PSO) and H-PSOTS algorithms were applied to three benchmark networks proposed in the literature: the Balerma irrigation network, the ZJ network and the Rural network. The hybrid methodology obtained good results when seeking an optimal solution and revealed high computational performance, making it a new option for the optimal design of real water distribution networks.
