Tabata protocol: a review of its application, variations and outcomes

Abstract: Based on our results, variations of the Tabata Protocol seem to be indicated to provide increases in aerobic power that are similar to traditional aerobic training while being less time consuming. These adaptations seem to be mainly due to peripheral adaptations. Moreover, the use of Tabata Protocols to promote weight loss is not substantiated by the reviewed studies.

“…For six weeks, the participants performed 7-8 bouts of 20 second cycling intervals at 170% of VO2 max with 10 seconds of rest between sets. Due to difficulties in reproducing the protocol in day-to-day training, different modified Tabata-based protocols were summarized under the title "Tabata-like protocols" [12]. The use of those protocols was found to be effective in well-trained athletes [13,14] in individuals with a sedentary lifestyle [15,16], as well as in top-level athletes [17,18].…”

“…In contrast, the present study used a mechanical braking device, similar to that used by Tabata et al (1996). Such differences further reinforce the problem of generalisation of interval protocols reported in previous studies (Viana et al, 2018c), especially regarding the protocol proposed by Tabata et al (Tabata et al, 1996;Viana et al, 2018a).…”
